Brisk Jaunt

I was up at 5:40 am. And out the door by about 6. 49 degrees! I still wore shorts and brought my flash light. It really isn't bright enough. Good think I ordered a head lamp it will be by next week...I hope. I started bringing my IPOD with me. I listened to an episode of Wormwood and some NPR Wait Wait don't tell me. I didn't get all of the jokes but the ones I did get were funny. I"m trying to listen to the news more often. Oh and while I walked the dogs I did a Coffee Break Spanish lesson. It was mostly review but I am determined to be fluent...I hate how they teach it is in school sometimes...Any who it is getting fun b/c I can talk more with the cooks at work.

I felt strong today.

1: 10:22
2:10:26
3: 10:05
4:9:48
5: 9:28 (MP!)
6: 9:49
I run my easy miles to fast...not that i'm complaining..I"m considering myself a VDOT 36 so my easy miles should be at 11 minute mile...on my bad days i run that--but then I feel like a slug...so I think 10:30 is a good easy pace...MP is 9:30 and Threshold is 8:55...my supposeded easy pace is the only one that feels too slow...

any who I better shower and get going...i get to play with my friends 1st grade class this morning!

I run easy by feel. If it feels easy then it is. That easy pace varies--sometimes 9 min pace feels easy, sometimes it feels too difficult.

I have always noticed that my easy pace on the vdot scale is always really slow. So I don't bother with it. I do like having it as a ballpark figure for tempos runs and such.

Congratulations on getting an MP mile in there and for feeling great.

I run easy pace by feel as well.

Have fun with the 1st graders today!

Very nice, April. Its exciting about the MP mile! Good luck with those easy miles.

Thanks all! I will do that with the easy miles. I"m trying to be more official with my runs. Before I knew about a VDOT I just ran with how I felt like that day. I still am but I guess I"m just giving them names now.

Oh I forgot to announce--I signed up for the Indy Mini--which is a 1/2 I really wanted to do and is why I was reluctant to sign up for a full marathon. The Illinois marathon is a week before the Indy Mini and wouldn't be able to do the Indy one :( So I will be running the Indy Mini and then in June I will be running the South Bend or Notre Dame full Marathon. I can't sign up yet b/c they don't have that stuff up yet for 2010--but I"m pretty excited!

Boo on the no Illinois marathon! Maybe I'll have to head over to Indy--it's only a couple hours. I'll know soon whether I'll be able to run it or not. It would be fun to meet you!

From april27 on Tue, Sep 29, 2009 at 17:29:40 from 99.188.251.180

I completely agree--I want to meet you too! Yes Indy would be awesome! Sorry about Illinois--South Bend is cheaper and closer...plus it was an easy sell since SO has never been to the Norte Dame stadium (I haven't been either).

You were very busy on that run---your brain was getting a workout!!!

I just finished an article that talked about easy pace and they discussed how it does feel hard and takes some getting used to, so just keep at it!!

From april27 on Tue, Sep 29, 2009 at 21:37:53 from 99.188.251.180

Kelli,

What do you mean by easy pace feels hard? do you mean it is hard to slow down?

From JD on Tue, Sep 29, 2009 at 21:57:04 from 32.178.197.25

Nice "Brisk Jaunt". Easy pace at 11:00 mile would be difficult. I just go by feel. There were some bloggers who ran the Indy Mini this year. Sounds like a fun race.

From Kelli on Tue, Sep 29, 2009 at 22:20:22 from 71.219.96.151

YUP, that is what I meant. Is that not what you meant? I have always argued (and heard other people say the same) that is hurts to run really slow--whatever your really slow is, as we know it is different for everyone. This article just confirmed that, but also stated that it is necessary for proper recovery of both the body and the glycogen levels. It was very interesting.

For me, the best way to run slow is to run with people. Just get me talking and I naturally slow way down.

From auntieem on Wed, Sep 30, 2009 at 12:01:29 from 67.182.145.8

Easy miles are the hardest! You know I'm a failure at it. For me, running with people makes me speed up. Very occasionally, I'll run with my husband, who is not a fast runner at all. Going at his mile pace actually makes my whole body hurt! Strange, huh?

That's one of my after marathon goals: lots of slow running.

From Kelli on Wed, Sep 30, 2009 at 12:18:23 from 71.219.96.151

Good point---it does matter WHO you run with. But, talking just naturally slows me down. I can not run super fast AND hold a real conversation at the same time. Slow running is definitely an art.

From april27 on Wed, Sep 30, 2009 at 17:11:53 from 143.43.10.80

Kelli--yes that is what I meant! It hurts my shins to run too slow!

I can't wait till Indy Mini--i you know of any one who is going to run it maybe we can all meet up and just say hey!
