7:30 am 66 degrees to start out ended in a sweaty mess of 78 degrees. 62 percent humidity and allllll sun!

Look Rat I ran 10! I hope you did too!

The first 7 went pretty welll. but I walked much of the last 3. My theory on this was b/c I was carrying a frozen water bottle for the first 3ish. then I set it down for the next four and picked it up.At some point I thought that someone had taken my water bottle b/c I misjudged the pick up point. Any who, then my shoulder started to grow tired. My guess is from carrying the water bottle. I'm going to the running store today to find a strappy water bottle thingy. The around the waist ones bother me too much to bother with. I gave mine away to my brother. HOpeflly he will get better use out of it!

update--warning--long blah about group running

I hate going to my running store. It is only a mile away so it is better than buying something online and paying shipping or going to the next nearest one about 35 miles away.

I hate it b/c about two years ago I signed up for a 10miler training program. I had already completed a ½ but I thought it would provide me motivation through the winter and provide camaraderie.

Instead, I felt the pressure of people running with me. I am a great running when I feel like no one is watching. Yes I do very well at races (where lots of people are watching) but at races I don’t feel judged.

I attribute this feeling to high school days when I felt judged in gym class.

Any who so I was at the store buying my handheld bottle and one of the trainers was there. She is more and more of a name now in running in our area just b/c of the races she is starting and the training programs etc. She said she saw me on FB asking about the November ½ (I was also picking up a sign up form and she saw it I my hand). She also told me there was a training program for it. I said no thank you I’m more of a solo runner. She said well as long as you are out there running. That is what is important. I froze…I felt judged. I know this is completely insane. But I did. I wanted to shout—I have done 2 half marathons this year along! And I’m signed up for two more races this year, about to sign up for a 3rd! I count! I’m a runner!

During the aforementioned training program I kept having pains and just issues in general with running. As soon as I stopped going to the program—pains went away (eventually)

Any who thanks for letting me vent.

Nice ten miler. I like my hand held bottle. I think it's made by "Ultimate Directions".

Thanks--I'll have to look into that brand

JD- I ended up getting the amphipod one. seemed cool in the store and that is the only brand they had in the store!

I've only got an around-the-waist water bottle thingie and I hate it and go without it most of the time. Maybe I should follow your example and get a hand-held.

Also, I don't know this woman and didn't hear her tone of voice, but it sounds to me like she was trying to be friendly. Try not to take offense.

C In C--you are totally right--she was being nice. And I wish in someway I could prove myself there (so that I could get over this feeling). This is all very much internal. Plus I had a bad run in with my aunt not 10 minutes prior.

The handheld felt very comfy in the store. Plus it is like 1/2 the price!

Nice job getting in your 10. You make me look like a total slacker :)

I doubt that lady was being judgemental. It actually sounded pretty encouraging to me. Either way, it doesn't matter what anybody else thinks about your running. It's all about you and your personal goals.

For what it's worth, I think you're awesome!

I'll have to look into that type of hand held as well. I agree with RT - running is all about you and your personal goals. And it's also affected by what is going on with your life, job, school, family, injuries, etc., so other people should not be quick to judge how your running is going. Perhaps this lady just likes to sound authoritative. Depending on her personality and tone of voice I might have taken some offense as well, feeling that she was being condescending to me. A simple "good luck with your race" probably would've been better received.

And, YEA for the 10 miler!! Even with some walk breaks, that is awesome!!

You mention she has started a lot of races and training programs for them. Perhaps her identity and self fulfillment are tied up in that mission. If you look at it that way, your declining to be part of her training says you don't find her mission valuable. Her statement "well as long as you are out there running. That is what is important." is more of her finding a way to still feel she is making a difference even though you don't find something she has worked hard to provide to the local running community valuable to you. I agree the statement was a bit dismissive, but was a defensive reaction against your rejection. Sort of a "well you may be motivated to run on your own, but lots of other people aren't, so I am still important."

thanks cookie

AZ--what you said is interesting and a new perspective I hadn't thought of. The way she said I dn't think was mean or cruel. But you are right...I now tend to think that maybe it was more on the defense.

In a group setting like that I tend to compare my running with others...then the perfectionist in me sets in and if I can't be as fast/strong whatever as the others I just want to throw in the towel. When I'm alone I just race against me. Thank you for that perspective. Made me feel better.
